Solar panels are designed to use the sunlight that reaches your roof and turn it into electricity for your home or business. Once installed, it is easy to assume they will take care of themselves. After all, the sun comes up every morning, and the panels sit there doing their job. But one thing can get in the way: dirt. Dust, pollen, bird droppings, and other debris gradually settle on solar panels. In a place like Modesto, where dry weather can leave a layer of dust on outdoor surfaces, this buildup is worth paying attention to. Regular solar panel cleaning keeps your panels clear and helps your solar system use available sunlight more effectively.
How Dirt Affects Solar Panels
To produce power, solar panels need sunlight. When dust particles cover the panel surface, they can block some sunlight from reaching the solar cells. The effect depends on factors such as the panels’ condition, weather conditions, angle of placement, and more. A thin layer of dust has little effect, but excessive dirt and bird droppings can block parts of the solar panel from receiving sunlight.
Rainwater will wash off some dust particles, but the panels may not stay clean afterward. Some dust particles can remain stuck to the surface, and after the rain, dried water stains and bird droppings can be left behind. Pollen and other debris may also gather between rainy days.
If your energy production seems low, dirt may be one reason, though it is not the only one. Other reasons include shading, seasonal changes, technical problems, and more. Cleaning panels is part of system maintenance, but it doesn’t guarantee increased energy production.
Why Cleaning Solar Panels Requires Care
It may seem easy to climb onto your roof and hose down the panels. However, solar panels require special care, and roof work carries its own risks. Using the wrong equipment or cleaning products can damage the panel surface, and walking on them is generally undesirable.
High-pressure water isn’t always the right approach either. To choose the best cleaning method, consider the equipment manufacturer’s recommendations, the type of dirt, and the installation’s current condition. Abrasive brushes and chemicals can scratch and otherwise damage the panels’ surface.
Professional cleaning services offer a more realistic option for homeowners who prefer not to risk their lives. Cleaners can use specialized equipment and techniques to clean the panels while avoiding damage to both the panels and the surroundings. This is especially convenient for panels in hard-to-reach areas.
How Often Should Solar Panels Be Cleaned?
No universal cleaning schedule fits every solar installation. Some systems collect dirt faster because they’re near dusty roads, trees, or bird-frequented areas. Others may remain relatively clean for longer. Local weather, the panels’ angle, and the amount of debris in the surrounding environment all play a part.
Checking your system’s energy production can help you notice unusual changes, especially when you compare similar periods and account for seasonal conditions. You can also look for visible dirt from a safe, ground-level position. If the panels look heavily soiled or their performance changes unexpectedly, consider scheduling an inspection or professional cleaning.
The goal is not to clean the panels constantly. The goal is to keep them in condition to operate without unnecessary work or expense.
